Julian Gau

About
Julian Gau is a musician based in Boston. He has performed as a cellist in the Apollo Ensemble since August 2022 and also played in the New England Philharmonic and the Du Bois Orchestra. He studied music and mathematics at Brown University and orchestral conducting at the Boston Conservatory.
As a conductor, Julian serves as artistic director of the Horizon Ensemble, an orchestra that performs music by friends and music of history. He is also music director of the Providence Medical Orchestra and the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York, as well as a Conducting Fellow with the Chelsea Symphony. Besides orchestras, he works in opera and musical theatre. He recently served as music director for Cabaret with Brown University, The Card Game & the Coffee Cantata with West End Lyric, and Katie the Strongest of the Strong with Opera Saratoga. He has also acted as an assistant conductor with Boston Summer Opera and White Snake Projects.
Sometimes Julian is a composer; the Apollo Ensemble performed his Serenade for orchestra in August 2024. Otherwise, he is active as a pianist, arts administrator, and occasional critic. In addition to music, Julian enjoys noodles, stories, and time with friends.
