Viola
Jeff Bigler

About
Jeff Bigler can’t remember a time when he didn’t play music. He started playing violin when he was three years old, a few years after the Suzuki violin program was first introduced in the United States. He switched to playing primarily viola when he was in the sixth grade, and he found that he preferred the mellow sound of the viola and its place among the middle harmonies of the orchestra.
Jeff studied engineering in college and is now a high school physics teacher, but music has remained his passion throughout his life. Since moving to the Boston area Jeff has played with several orchestras; besides playing with the Apollo Ensemble of Boston since 2020, he is principal violist of the Firebird Pops Orchestra and the Reading Symhony orchestra, and he also plays with Symphony by the Sea, the Horizon Ensemble of Boston, the Orchestra Book Club, and chamber music with the Listeso Music Group.
Jeff is president of the board of the Apollo Ensemble of Boston, leveraging his past experience as a board member (and violist) of the New England philharmonic and as current and past president of two other (non-music-related) nonprofits.
Jeff is also the curator of the largest and most well-known collection of viola jokes on the internet.
