About
Mathieu Moutou began playing the violin at 13 and earned the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) with distinction six years later. Originally from Mauritius, he was awarded the Youth Excellence Award in 2016 and has performed at the Mauritius State House before moving to the U.S. on a full scholarship.
Mathieu graduated magna cum laude from Bates College in 2022 with majors in Music and Mathematics. At Bates, he served as concertmaster for the Bates Orchestra for 3 years. After winning the 2019 Bates Concerto Competition, he performed Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the orchestra. He later represented the college at the Judith Elser Concerto Competition, which earned him an invitation to perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the orchestra in 2022.
As a musician, Mathieu is deeply passionate about fostering a love for classical music in his home country. His goal is to contribute to the advancement of music education in Mauritius by expanding access to quality instruction and nurturing local talent. Through his involvement with the Alizé String Ensemble, he performed several orchestral works and actively supported string music education. He envisions creating opportunities for young musicians to study and perform classical music while building a vibrant and enduring classical music culture in Mauritius.
Mathieu studied with Gérard Télot (Royal Schools of Music), Dean Stein (Juilliard School), and Amos Lawrence (Curtis Institute). He currently performs with the Brookline Symphony Orchestra, Horizon Ensemble, and Apollo Ensemble. Outside of music, Mathieu works as a senior analyst for a private economic consulting firm in Boston.
