Lucy Caplan

Lucy Caplan is a violist and music historian. Her first book, Dreaming in Ensemble: How Black Artists Transformed American Opera,  will be published by Harvard University Press in 2025. She is Assistant Professor of Music at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where she teaches a wide range of classes on American music, African American music, and cultural history. In addition to her academic work, Lucy also writes frequently for public audiences. Her essays have been published in The New Yorker online, Opera Magazine, and Opera News, among others, and her program notes have been commissioned by Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Princeton University Concerts, and Lincoln Center.

A graduate of Harvard College, she holds a Ph.D. in American Studies and African American Studies from Yale University. As a violist, she has participated in festivals including Kneisel Hall, Orford Arts Center, and the Castleman Quartet Programs. In her free time, Lucy enjoys playing chamber music, baking, running, and snuggling her cat.
