About
Born in Wilson, North Carolina, Jonathan McGarry studied French horn with David Jolley at UNC School of the Arts and Eli Epstein at New England Conservatory. He has performed with Atlantic Symphony, MassOpera, Apollo Ensemble, Brookline Symphony, Mercury Orchestra, Symphony Pro Musica and has appeared as an extra horn with the Charlotte Symphony. He has attended Eastern Music Festival, Orford Musique, and the New York String Orchestra Seminar. As a soloist, he has performed with the Eastern Music Festival Orchestra, Brookline Symphony, received 2nd place at the 54th International Horn Symposium and 3rd prize at the Harlan Duenow Young Artists Concerto Competition.
Notable performances include Gershwin’s Summertime with George Schuller and the NEC Jazz Orchestra, Brahms 3rd Symphony with Gerard Schwarz, and the U.S. premiere of All Night Long with Jacob Collier at MIT. As a chamber musician he has received coaching from Elizabeth Starr Masoudnia, Les Roettges, James Sommerville, David Shifrin, and Michelle Baker. He has been described as a “rising horn virtuoso” with “power and lovely tone” by The Cultural Voice of North Carolina for Strauss’ 1st Horn Concerto and his playing as “heartrending” by The Boston Musical Intelligencer for Brahms’ Schicksalied.
